Getting Started

The best way to start your search is to check the Capital City Libraries' (CCL) catalog for a book, magazine, video or audiotape.

Capital City Libraries (CCL)

Capital City Libraries (CCL) is a consortium created in 1989 to improve services to the Capital City Libraries' patrons by coordinating information resource sharing and facilitating the implementation of new technologies in all participating libraries. Patrons are allowed to place holds on materials at any CCL library from any CCL library and have them delivered to the library of their choice. The consortium is composed of the following member libraries:

Search Tips

The catalog can be searched in many different ways. Materials can be searched by title, author, and subject. If you are not quite sure of an exact title or author, keyword searching is a great place to start.

Keyword Searching
The keyword program looks for it in any location. For example, in a TITLE KEYWORD search, it will find titles that have that word anywhere in the title, whether it is the first word, the fifth word, or the thirtieth word.

Helpful Hints

Title Searching
Titles can be searched in two ways - title browse and title keywords.

A title browse search is used when you know most of the title you are looking for.

Examples:
Gone with the Wind Complete title
From Here to Shortened title

A title keyword search is used when you only know a single word or portion of the title.

Examples:
Huckleberry Single word search
Gone Wind Multiple word search
Comput$ For words starting with comput...

Subject Searching
A subject keyword search is very similar to a title words search in the way that your entry is searched. The catalog will show a list of subject headings that contain your keyword.

Examples:
medicine Single word search
France travel Multiple word search
comput$ For words starting with comput...

A subject browse search is very similar to a title words search in the way that your entry is searched. The catalog will show a list of subject headings that contain your keyword.

Examples:
space travel multiple word subjects
vegetab shortened subject

Requesting Materials

Once you find what you are looking for, there are several ways of obtaining it

Checking Out Items
A Capital City Library Card is required when checking out materials. Library cards are issued and can be used at all CCL Libraries. A registered borrower will be issued a library card. The card is to be presented at each checkout. If borrower does not have card at time of checkout, an acceptable form of identification is required.

Who Can Have a Card?

Any permanent resident of the state of Alaska who presents an Alaska Driver's License or other acceptable form of identification showing permanent mailing address is eligible to register as a borrower. A person under 18 years of age may have a parent or guardian sign a parental responsibility card in lieu of other identification.

A visitor, visiting Juneau on a regular basis for work related reasons (cruise ship workers, airline workers, consultants on state contract), may be offered a visitor registration if the visitor has a valid local work address and presents adequate picture identification showing permanent out-of-state address. There is a charge of $10.00 for this card.

Other visitors may be offered a temporary registration if the visitor has a valid local mailing address and presents adequate picture identification showing permanent out-of-state address.

A card may be issued to a state agency for use by that agency's staff. One person in that agency must sign a Registration form and agree to be responsible for all items checked out. The card must be presented at each checkout.
