Government Publications Program
Federal Documents
The State Library is one of eight depository libraries in Alaska that receives Federal publications from the Government Printing Office in Washington D.C. Librarians select materials from federal agencies that have the greatest impact on Alaska. As a depository, we also have free access to various Federal bulletin boards that post electronic publications.
Several helpful web sites that can be accessed by anyone are:
- American Factfinder.Access to economic and population censuses back to 1990. You can even search for census information based on a street address.
- State and County Quick Facts. Summary of available Census information for States and counties/boroughs. Extremely easy to use.
- Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids. Age appropriate information on government structure and how laws are made.
- FDsys. Search dozens of federal publications and databases at once or individually.
- Sales Product Catalog. Need your own personal copy of a federal publication? Find it and buy it here.
Federal publications are especially pertinent to state government. Many state programs are mandated by Congress and regulated by Federal agencies. In addition, the U.S. Government collects statistics from every state, and subsequently creates standardized data comparisons between states.
You can search for federal publications held in Juneau libraries through the CCL Library Catalog.
To supplement the materials received from the Federal Depository Program, we offer additional federal government resources, such as:
- A computerized index to Federal publications is available from state agency offices.
- The Congressional Information Service (CIS), which indexes and microfiches all the reports, documents, hearings, and other publications produced by Congress. An electronic index is also available for congressional material.
- The American Statistics Index, which indexes and microfiches thousands of statistical publications produced throughout the Federal government.
- Legal sources that provide notes and background information about Federal laws, including the United States Code Annotated and the United States Code Congressional and Administrative News.
- Regulatory information, including all editions of the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Register.
State Documents
The Alaska State Library makes Alaska state documents freely available to the public. These are indexed through the CCL Library Catalog. Publications produced by state government are timely, pertinent, and provide a wide range of data and information to the public. For more information, visit the State Documents for the Public page.
The Alaska State Library also operates the Alaska State Publications Program. This program makes state
publications available to Alaskans by distributing them to local depository libraries. For more information,
visit the Alaska State Publications Program page.
